This is a documents that presents the world situation about landmines. It is edited by a group of NGOs that have chosen to work together. The group is called 'Landmine monitor core group', it is composed by Human Rights Watch, Handicap International, Kenya Coalition Against Landmines, Mines Action Canada and Norvegian People's Aid. I have chosen this report because I personally faced the danger of landmines in a field, even though my position was not related to demining activities. We, the volunteers, are in danger because these weapons are everywhere, inside buildings and down the roads that we use during our missions. We are not supposed to be wounded by war devices as we are going to these countries to help victims and rehabilitate hospitals and houses. But, we are still facing the trouble due to the fact that some countries do not want to sign the treaty to ban landmines. We cannot say that landmines is one of the main dangers for humanitarian workers because it is not. The main problem for expatriates in mission is to avoid a car accident, and it is the first cause of mortality rate during foreign missions.

Even if there are good information in this matter of banning landmines there are not enough projects and funds because many countries are still affected by these devices. Within 97 countries, more than 230,000 victims recorded for 2003 and an estimated total of 400.000 mine survivors are living on our planet today. [...]

Five organisations have decided to coordinate their work in order to take responsability over a system that would lead the community of NGOs for a communication against Landmines and submit reliable data inside the debate. Also, more than 62 millions of stockpiled antipersonnel landmines were destroyed in recent years. Some countries are late in reporting their obligation of transparency according to the treaty they have ratified. Some misunderstandings were discussed about the fact to foreign stockpiling and transit of these devices and some different technologies. [...]
